Martian Child (2007)

11/02/07

The story line of Martian Child is certainly not new. But despite its predictablity, John Cusack and Bobby Coleman (as the child) bring a freshness to this family drama that make it quite endearing.

[More:]

John Cusack plays David, a science fiction writer who is considering adoption as a single parent, two years after the death of his wife. He is matched up with 6-year old Dennis, who thinks he is from Mars, and is on a mission to figure out how to live like a human being. What is so refreshing is the way in which David allows the child to be himself, never forcing him to be a square peg in a round hole.

Credit Seth Bass and Jonathan Tollins for their smart and sensitive screenplay, based on David Gerrold's book. (We are told that the film is inspired by actual events. And indeed, David Gerrold has written science fiction, and also adopted an 8-year old boy.) Also credit Menno Meyjes for his quiet direction of this understated film.

The highlight of the film however is the acting. John Cusack is engaging and moving -- the perfect blend of unconventional and everyman. His real life sister Joan (playing his sister in the film) is delightful and funny, and gives her usual scene-stealing performance in her supporting role. It is a treat to see these two very talented actors on screen together.

Bobby Coleman gives a sensitive performance as the sun-fearing Martian child. This is not your usual big-eyed waif that everyone falls in love with from the opening scene. In fact, his character is quietly challenging, which is what gives the film its pathos.

Amanda Peet gives a charming turn as David's friend, and Oliver Platt is fun in the role of David's agent. Angelica Huston has a small but juicy role as the publisher. (Huston and Cusack were also together in The Grifters.)

All in all a very sweet, heartwarming, and slightly quirky film.
