Addie's Restaurant, Rockville, MD

10/18/07

Part of the Black Restaurant Group, Addie's successfully blends New American cuisine, an eclectic atmosphere, a multitude of outdoor dining options, and good service for a very satisfying dining experience.

Chef Andre Cavallaro's rotating menu, though not big, offers a solid selection of steak, fish, and chicken entrées, each with a nice flare. There are also several salads to choose from. (I particularly enjoyed the mixed organic greens with blue cheese, pears, and walnuts.) On the night I was there, the menu included mushrooms in many of the entrées, which is great for those who like mushrooms. If not, the menu can seem slightly limited in choices. However, you can't really go wrong with any of the menu items. And the porcini encrusted sea trout was delicious, even for a non-mushroom eater. The ribeye steak with spinach, whipped potatoes, and fried onion strings was also very tasty.

With a covered porch in front and a wrap-around deck on the side and back, Addie's is a dream-come-true for those who prefer to dine al fresco. Addie's is among the nicest outdoor dining experiences in the Washington metro area. The front porch is perfect for dining out in inclement weather, and the recently added deck is quite attractive. Altogether, the outdoor area probably triples the seating capacity of the restaurant, situated in an old converted house. The overall atmosphere is quite comfortable and casual, despite the upscale menu.

The menu is a little pricey, with salads averaging about $10, entrées ranging from $21 - $28, and desserts at $9. However, this is in line with other restaurants in its class, and the generous portions make the cost easier to swallow. Note that the restaurant offers wine and beer, but no alcohol.

Pastry chef Catherine Deery has created a fine selection of delectable desserts, though the menu doesn't offer quite enough chocolate for my taste.
