Within the first 2 minutes of Arena Stage's production of The Arabian Nights, the audience knows they are in for a real treat! Playwright/director Mary Zimmerman sets the stage for a lively, engaging theater experience as the actors enter and dress the stage to the beat of highly enthusiastic drums. With carpets unrolling, pillows flying, actors whooping, and excitement filling every corner of the Fichandler stage, the air is full of promise for a wonderful experience. And boy, does this play deliver!
When asked why I prefer theater over movies, my usual response is that there is magic in a theatrical experience which just cannot be achieved in a film. Disney's The Lion King directed by the very talented Julie Taymor is just such a magical experience! Yes, the film was wonderful. But the theatrical experience is beyond description.
Arena Stage kicks off the season in high style with the World Premiere of Moisés Kaufman's 33 Variations, in co-production with Tectonic Theater Project. Creator of The Laramie Project and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, and director of the Pulitzer and Tony-winning I Am My Own Wife, Kaufman is adept at translating actual or historical events into dramatic theater.
