Olney Theatre Center kicks off their 2008 season on a high note with John Patrick Shanley's Doubt: A Parable. Audience members may come away from the play having doubts about what actually occurred (or didn't occur), but there is no doubt that this thought-provoking drama is a rousing success!
Hats off to Artistic Director Blake Robison for producing the World Premiere of Karen Zacarías' comedy The Book Club Play as part of the Round House Theatre's 2007/2008 season. Expanding their horizons from productions of literary adaptations, this play is a very entertaining and refreshing contemporary work about people who love to read books.
Wintuk, the latest in the Cirque du Soleil offerings, advertises itself as "an enchanting tale for the whole family about a boy's quest for snow." This show is definitely more kid-friendly than previous Cirque spectacles, with more of a plot than usual, as the tag line boasts. Neither of these features is actually an improvement, unless of course you want to bring children to the show. For those of us who are Cirque du Soleil junkies, this is a somewhat diluted production. However, that being said, it is still highly entertaining.
After years of struggle with musical theater, Olney Theatre Center finally has a big success with its current production of Fiddler on the Roof. Thanks to the new theater with its excellent sound system, and an outstanding cast, this family favorite is deservedly playing to sold-out audiences.
Ernest J. Gaines' 1993 novel, A Lesson Before Dying, is being dubbed a "modern classic". Though this may sound like a contradiction in terms, Romulus Linney's adaptation certainly does address some very classic themes in a contemporary manner, which makes for a compelling evening of theater.
